Itinerary

Day 1. San Sebastián

Arrival to the stunning city of San Sebastián with its sandy beaches and its historical buildings. Taste the famous «pintxos» in the old town and wander around this beautiful city.

This city, also known as Donostia, lies along a white sandy bay between the Urgull and Igeldo hills.

Fishermen’s houses, a smart suburb and modern districts make it one of the most attractive cities on the Cantabrian coast. The Museum of San Telmo, the Peine del Viento (the Wind Comb) and the Kursaal are examples of how the city brings together modern and traditional features.Meanwhile, the province of Guipuzcoa, of which San Sebastián is the capital, blends sea and mountains, offering the traveller landscape, sports and cuisine, as well as interesting monuments. Basque cuisine has a recognised international prestige.

Day 2. San Sebastián to Getaria - Distance 27.7 Km

Your adventure begins in San Sebastián, a city famous for its stunning bay, elegant architecture, and world-class cuisine. As you leave behind La Concha Beach, you’ll cycle along the rugged coastline, passing charming fishing villages and scenic viewpoints. Stop in Orio for a taste of freshly grilled fish, a local specialty.

The ride continues through rolling green hills and coastal cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Cantabrian Sea. As you arrive in Getaria, you’ll be greeted by its picturesque old town and vibrant harbor. This town is home to the famous navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano and is known for its delicious txakoli wine. Take a stroll through its cobbled streets, visit the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, or enjoy a sunset by the sea. A perfect end to the first day of this unforgettable journey!

 

Day 3. Getaria to Lekeitio - Distance 37.0 Km.

Leaving Getaria behind, today’s ride takes you along some of the most stunning coastal landscapes of the Basque Country. You’ll pass through Zumaia, home to the spectacular Flysch cliffs, a geological wonder that tells millions of years of history. This UNESCO-listed site is a must-see!

The route continues through rolling countryside, offering fantastic ocean views. Stop in Ondarroa, a lively fishing town with a fascinating medieval bridge and excellent seafood restaurants. Taste marmitako, a delicious Basque tuna stew, before continuing towards Lekeitio.

Your day ends in this charming coastal town, where colorful boats line the harbor, and the island of San Nicolás offers a unique spot for a short walk at low tide. Explore the Gothic Basilica of Santa María, and enjoy a well-earned rest in one of Lekeitio’s cozy seaside bars.

Day 4. Lekeitio to Mundaka - Distance 47.8 Km

Today’s stage takes you deeper into the Basque coastal charm, with quiet country roads and breathtaking sea views. As you leave Lekeitio, you’ll pedal through forested hills and past serene beaches, perfect for a quick break.

A highlight of the day is the town of Gernika, a place of great historical and cultural importance. Visit the Gernika Peace Museum and the iconic Tree of Gernika, a symbol of Basque identity. Picasso’s famous painting brings to life the tragic bombing of this town during the Spanish Civil War.

From here, you continue towards Mundaka, a paradise for surfers and nature lovers. Located within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, this charming fishing village offers stunning landscapes, a laid-back atmosphere, and incredible seafood. Don’t miss the chance to try kokotxas, a Basque delicacy, before relaxing by the harbor.

Day 5. Mundaka to Plentzia - Distance 37.6 Km.

Today’s ride takes you through one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Basque coast. Leaving Mundaka, you’ll cycle along the cliffs of the Urdaibai Reserve, where lush forests meet the deep blue sea. Stop at the dramatic San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a spectacular islet with a 241-step climb to a medieval hermitage—well worth the effort for the panoramic views!

The route continues through charming coastal villages like Bermeo, known for its colorful harbor and strong fishing traditions. Enjoy some pintxos in a local tavern before continuing towards Bakio, a great spot to taste more txakoli wine.

Your journey ends in Plentzia, a peaceful seaside town with a wide sandy beach and a picturesque old town. Take a relaxing walk along the estuary or enjoy a sunset drink at one of the waterfront terraces.

Day 6. Plentzia to Bilbao - Distance 29.7 Km.

The final stretch of your adventure leads you towards the vibrant city of Bilbao. The ride starts with gentle coastal roads before heading inland through rolling green landscapes. Stop in Getxo, a stylish town famous for its elegant mansions and the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO-listed transporter bridge that connects both sides of the Nervión River.

As you reach Bilbao, you’ll feel the energy of this dynamic city. Visit the iconic Guggenheim Museum, an architectural masterpiece that transformed Bilbao into a cultural hub. Stroll through the Casco Viejo, the old town filled with charming streets, lively bars, and fantastic gastronomy. Celebrate the end of your journey with a feast of Basque tapas and a glass of local cider.
